One of the most widely misunderstood commandments in all of Scripture is found in Exodus 20:7: “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.” Most people hear that… and immediately think it’s about not saying “Oh my God” or avoiding certain phrases. And while our words absolutely matter, that understanding barely scratches the surface of what God is actually saying. The command is not merely about what comes out of your mouth… it is about the weight of what you carry with your life. In the ancient world, to bear someone’s name meant to represent them. It meant you acted on their behalf. You reflected their character. You carried their reputation wherever you went. As followers of Jesus Christ, we carry more than a personal faith… we carry His name.
